3D Gaussian Splatting in Rust: give it a video, get a 3D scene you can render in real time.
01 / The problem
Gaussian Splatting turns ordinary video into a 3D scene, but the reference code is Python and CUDA research code. I wanted to understand the method end to end, so I wrote the whole pipeline in Rust.
02 / Decisions
Gradients by hand
The CPU rasterizer has a hand-written backward pass for colour, opacity, position, scale and rotation, checked against finite differences.
GPU where it helps
An optional wgpu compute pass projects the Gaussians on the GPU for fast previews. Training stays on the CPU so it runs anywhere.
Easy to try
Pre-built binaries for Linux, macOS and Windows, standard .ply and .splat output, and optional Python bindings.
03 / Results
- Open source under MIT, with release binaries for three platforms.
